An Error in my previous blog and an arguement for a retail giant

Well great news after talking with Diane I found out I miss read what she was doing it turned out that she had in fact just woke up from a nap!! The specialist told Diane that dad’s liver is in good shape. I want to thank all of you who prayed for him and most of all, our Lord for keeping dad safe through this time. Hopefully dad’s demeanor will change as result of getting good news instead of bad. Still pray for my grandma though. Thanks.

As for me moving to Hull I think I will stay here for a few more months dad said we will get the small car fixed and insured so I can use it to find work and then go to work with it too, and also visit my two sisters out here which will be a good thing.

Now your all caught up with my news let’s tackle something on my mind since I read a blog of one of my friends.

The realities of working in a retail environment and what that entails.
First of all any retail job is poorly paying unless you receive a commission (even then it doesn’t often get more then $60,000/year).
Second the hours depend on how you perform and how well management likes you but if you step on management they will look for a way to fire your ass. The same as any job.
Third it’s damn hard work dealing with some of the sniveling idiots that set foot in your store. People think that retail will be easy but in fact I find it one the hardest jobs there is and I have held a gambit of positions from construction, production, slaughter house, office, direct sales, and call centre; out of them all retail and the call centre are the toughest.
Forth any business is looking out for number one the almighty dollar with out it there would be no business.
Fifth in any work place you must create an atmosphere that makes your business thrive. Yes it is something like a cult. You must make all your employees think in a way that promotes your needs. Why do you think Wal-Mart, Tim Horton’s, Future Shop, Starbucks and others have thrived it’s all atmosphere created by the owners. The retail world is not the only place where atmosphere is created it’s also created in churches, factories, cities and countries.
Sixth a retail store is not responsible for the work standards of their product manufacturers. If you want to get to the nitty gritty of it all, I have a gambit of examples of Canadian products that fill the shelves of our supermarkets and corner stores where the people who produced it were paid very meagerly with very little if any benefits. For example farmers both in the meat industry and the fruit and vegetable industry hire people under the table to do the labor. The employees there are paid substandard wages and have no rights, I know because I have worked for these places myself.

In the world of business the strong survive and the week parish, just look at Wal-Mart and Microsoft. How many of you are using machines powered by the giant’s software right now probably most of you unless you chose a Mac or are using Linux. Smart business practices often kill the competition, and every one hates it when a business succeeds in such a manner unless it is their own business, of course;)
All this said you have a right to make up your own mind about where you shop and what you buy but if your going to take a stand and avoid one store well you better not be a hypocrite and buy the products that are made locally on the backs of slave labor. As for myself I will continue to shop at Wal-Mart and possibly work there because they do have some of the best wages and befits in the retail industry.

Thanks,
Eric
